Upgrading Your Java Environment for to JRE
1.5.0_12



It is very important to follow ALL of the steps listed in this document. Do not assume anything can be skipped! If you have questions concerning anything in this document, please contact your desktop support provider.

Steps for Updating your Java Environment
You MUST be logged into the UNH VPN and have administrative rights on your machine to complete the steps below. If you do not have administrative rights, please contact your departmental IT staff.

  1. Ensure you have removed, if necessary, any later versions (anything newer than 1.5.0_12) of JRE that are installed on your desktop.
    a.   Start -> Run ->Type "control" hit enter
    b.   Click on "Add/Remove Programs"
    c.   Scroll to Java Runtime Environment and click “Change/Remove”
          and click Yes to “Are you sure you want to completely remove…”
    d.   Repeat step C to remove all “Java Runtime Environment” versions
          newer than 1.5.0_12.

  2. Install JRE 1.5.0_12
    a.   Click here to install JRE 1.5.0_12
    b.   Click Run and Run again when prompted(NOTE: You may see a
          dialogue box that asks you to Install or Don’t Install, if so, click
           Install)








    c.   Select typical setup and Accept at the license agreement box.



    d.   Select Finish in the installation completed box.

    NOTE: Some users have reported being asked to Restart their computers after installing JRE. In most cases you should NOT restart. If you have questions, please contact your desktop support provider.

  3. Depending on the application the first time that you login after installing JRE 1.5.0_12, you may see the following:
    a.   Launch you're application               
    b.   You may see the Security Warning below. Select Always trust
           content from this publisher and select run.




    c.   You may see a second Security box. Again, Select Always trust
          content from this publisher and select run.




    NOTE: Under some circumstances, the above security dialog boxes may be hidden under other windows. It may appear more than once. If you don’t see this box, you should minimize other windows on your desktop until it is visible. It is VERY important that you check off ‘Always trust…..’ especially in order to use Banner.

  4. Turn off any future updates to JRE (you need to be logged into the application to view the JRE control panel).
    a.    Once logged into the application, right click on the Java icon in        the system tray status area in the lower right hand corner by your
           clock
    b.    Select "Open Control Panel"
    c.    Select "Update tab"
    d.    Deselect “Check for Updates Automatically"
    e.    Click Apply at the bottom and close the Java Control Panel by
           clicking on the red “X” in the upper right corner of the window.

  5. Note: When you first launch your application you may see other messages or get other windows appearing, depending on your local security settings. Not everyone will see these but you might see the following examples:

    a.) 'This website wants to run the following add-on... If you trust this site, click here. Go ahead and click and run active X control

    b.) You may get a Security warning box asking if you want to run the ActiveX control click run.
