Java JRE Install
Upgrading Your Java Environment for Internet Native Banner
The Banner forms that you currently use when you are using Banner will be upgraded to a new version, version 10gR2, during the fall 2007 semester, after R+30. When that upgrade is done, you will need new software in order to display and use the Banner forms. Jinitiator, which you currently use, will no longer work correctly.
You will need to download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.5.0_12 (often also referred to as J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12) in order for the new version of the Banner forms to display and function correctly. The following instructions will walk you through the download and installation process.
It is very important to follow ALL of the steps listed in this document. Do not assume that anything can be skipped. If you have questions concerning anything in this document, please contact your desktop support provider.
You MUST have administrative rights on your machine in order to complete the steps listed. If you do not have administrative rights, please contact your departmental IT staff.
Steps for Updating Your Java Environment
1) Check to determine what version, if any, of JRE (Java Runtime Environment) you have installed on your desktop. The easiest way to do this is to click on Start à Control Panel à Add or Remove Programs.
a) The ‘Add or Remove Programs’ window will appear, and after a few seconds, a list of your installed programs will display.
b) Any versions of JRE that are installed on your desktop will appear in this list. The exact wording of each version may be slightly different, depending upon what version or versions are installed.
c) The most recent version should be no later than version 1.5.0_12, and the listing will appear as: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12.
2) If you see a listing for a later version, you should remove it. A later version may appear as: ‘J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 15’, or something similar.
a) Remove any versions of JRE that are later than version 1.5.0_12.
b) In the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ window, scroll to the listing of the later version of JRE, click on it, then click ‘Remove’. If a question to the effect of ‘Are you sure you want to completely remove…’ appears, click Yes. Not everyone will get this confirming question.
c) Repeat step B to remove all Java 2 Runtime Environment or J2SE Runtime Environment versions that are NOT version 1.5.0_12.
d) Close the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ window.
3) Install JRE 1.5.0_12.
a) Click here to install JRE 1.5.0_12.
b) Click Run and Run again when prompted. NOTE: You may see a dialog box that asks you to Install or Don’t Install. If so, click Install.

c) Accept the license agreement and select Next.
d) Select Finish when prompted.
4) The first time that you log into Banner using the new forms environment, after installing JRE 1.5.0_12, you should see the Security Warning below.
a) Check off ‘Always trust content from this publisher’. NOTE: You may see a different dialog box than what is displayed below depending upon the version of Java you have installed on your desktop.

b) You may see a second security box. Again, check off ‘Always trust content from this publisher’.

NOTE: Under some circumstances, the above security dialog box may be hidden under other windows. It may appear more than once. If you don’t see this box, you should minimize other windows on your desktop until it is visible. It is VERY important that you check off ‘Always trust…..’ in order to use Banner.
5) Turn off any future updates to JRE. You need to be logged into Banner to view the JRE control panel.
a) Once
logged into Banner, right click on the Java icon
in the system tray status area in the lower
right hand corner by your clock.
b) Select ‘Open Control Panel’.
c) Select ‘Update Tab’.
d) Deselect ‘Check for Updates Automatically’.
e) A ‘Java Update – Warning’ box may pop up. If it does, click on ‘Never Check’.
f) Click ‘Apply’ at the bottom, then close the Java Control Panel by clicking on ‘Okay’.
6) NOTE: When you first launch Banner, you may see other messages or get other windows appearing, depending upon your local security settings. Not everyone will see these. Some of these possibilities include the following.
a) ‘This website wants to run the following add-on….If you trust this website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here.’ If this appears, click and drag down to ‘run ActiveX control’.
b) You may get the following popup, asking if you run to run this ActiveX control. Click ‘Run’. You should then get the normal security warning pictured in item 4 above.
